Genioplasty is more commonly known as chin surgery or repositioning. This surgical procedure is done to correct receding chins, chin misalignment or for chin reduction.
Genioplasty can be effective for patients with a small or receding chin. A chin that seems too small in proportion to other facial features will possibly make the nose appear overly long.
Plastic surgeons frequently use chin implants to balance features of a younger patient, or a genioplasty may be used in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure in a more mature patient.
Reshaping the chin can be accomplished either by using chin implants, or by repositioning the bone supporting the chin (sliding genioplasty). There are many types of implants available, manufactured from a variety of materials, including silicone or other substances. There is no available evidence to suspect that silicone implants cause any disease. Your surgeon will consult with you, and discuss recommendations for the type of implant to use.
Genioplasty candidates must be in good health, have no active diseases or serious, pre-existing medical conditions, and must have realistic expectations of the outcome of the surgery.
